Best deals on hybrid bikes
Pay more and the best hybrid bikes will come with higher quality groupsets, meaning better quality shifting and less effort needed to shift between gears. There are also lots of hybrid bikes that offer a triple chainset. This is good if you want some seriously easy gears, but the gear range is often not that much more than if you just have two rings at the front, and it can be harder to find the perfect gear if you want to get into a rhythm on a long flat road or steady climb.
The differences between the two are simple, with rim brakes using two pads to grip the rim of the wheel, while disc brakes grip a rotor attached to the hub of the wheel. Rim brakes are the cheaper option and have been the preferred method of braking on road bikes since time immemorial. Hybird bikes with disc brakes might be more expensive, but offer more consistent braking in all conditions. They are a little more expensive than rim brakes, so you should only expect them on the best hybrid bikes, but offer better braking power and more consistent performance in both wet and dry conditions. The first thing you should do to your new hybrid bike is take these off and throw them in the bin, and invest in a more suitable pair.
A better option is to invest in a pair of panniers, which will mean the weight is taken by your bike rather than by you.
All of the best hybrid bikes should come with eyelets in the frame that will allow it to take a pannier rack. You should also try and find a hybrid bike that has plenty of clearance between the frame and the tyre to enable you to fit mudguards, as well as eyelets so you can fit ones with better coverage, rather than flimsy clip on ones.

The vast majority of major bike manufacturers create hybrid bikes — Specialized , Trek , Giant and Boardman are all examples of brands who offer flat bar multi terrain hybrid bikes within their collections. Look for a retailer that allows you to test ride the bike before purchase, and promises to fit you up as part of the bike buying process, for no extra charge.
Some also offer money back guarantees after 30 days, in case you change your mind. If you click on this then we may receive a small amount of money from the retailer when you purchase the item. Read more: Carrera Subway review. A comfortable hybrid which will inspire confidence in newer riders, thanks to the wide Kenda tyres. The bike features an aluminium frame with a steel fork. The Subway 1 comes with Tektro Aries mechanical disc brakes and Shimano Torney gears, whilst the Subway 2 has hydraulic disc brakes and Shimano Altus gears — a slight upgrade. Complete with front end suspension, this is a hybrid bike designed for a rider who wants to experiment with gentle off-roading such as excursions down country bridleways. The fork offers 75mm of travel, and can be adjusted to provide a stiffer ride on the tarmac. However, coupled with the very wide 42c Kenda tyres, the extra spring does take some of the joy out of road riding. We reviewed an entry level model from this highly popular hybrid range. Perfect for commuting, this is a road ready hybrid that will feel light and fast on tarmac. The frame is made from high quality aluminium, with a steel fork and effective Shimano Altus groupset.
Trek is one of the big three alongside Giant and Specialized and the FX has been designed specifically for riders who want to feel speedy on tarmac whilst still enjoying the relaxed stance of a mountain bike. The frame is constructed from aluminium, with a carbon fork to absorb vibration. Constructed from lightweight aluminium, this unisex hybrid bike weighs in at around 12kg, with slight differences depending upon size. This model sports a Suntour NCX Air suspension fork, which puts it in the category of off-road ready hybrid. Can you recommend what bikes meet my selections please?

I have to take up cycling as a regular exercise machine because of some heart problems. If it is still not sold and interested in selling, kindly email me. Many thanks. B Mistry. You can spend a WHOLE lot more than that and likely spend as much time adjusting your bike as riding it. There is a lot of snobbery around cycling. Just get a comfortable bike and ride it. In our area, where hills are frequent, only battery-powered bikes are practical. Very interesting. I use exercise bike for 40 minutes every other day.
Regards, david. In my opinion a hybrid is supposed to be a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike!! What hybrid about a standard pushbike? The brakes are mechanical caliper disc brakes, and they do an excellent job in wet or dry conditions. The upright ride, long adjustable seatpost and ability to ride on some trails make this one a real winner in my books. OK, so now I want to take a look at a dual sport style hybrid.
Best Hybrid Bikes - Fitness Bikes
These have been showing up all over the place lately, and like the sport hybrid they have broad appeal. Most dual sports have a comfortable, upright riding position, with wide riser bars and a light and snappy frame. Frame : First off, this is a gorgeous bike. The aluminum alloy frame features a slightly curved top tube with oversized tubing. The front fork is a bladed high tension steel.
The effect is a very responsive and agile ride. It sports a pair of c Weinmann double walled alloy rims, and the bike rolls on 40c Innova tires, which, despite their width, actually do very well on pavement due to a moderate tread pattern. I like that. Their Alysa 2 bike is a really good bet. The frame is simple, effective and rugged.
The components are well chosen, and the whole package is very cohesive. I just love the lines, it seems to hug the wheels. The whole thing weighs about 26 pounds. Components : The drivetrain is standard for this tier, featuring Tourney components, and a set of Tourney EZ-Fire shifters. The brakes are good-looking and effective mechanical discs.
The wheels are full alloy, double-walled Weinmann rims paired up to a set of 35C Kenda Kwick Tendrils. I actually really like the tread pattern for rainy conditions, and they could certainly tackle grass or gravel pathways. If you want a cheap brand name hybrid bicycle with the potential to last for many years, the Raleigh Alysa 2 is a good candidate. For many riders commuters included , comfort is a necessity. In my opinion, one of the key contributors to rider comfort is frame geometry.
A properly designed comfort hybrid has a chair-like, upright seating position. This not only improves your ability to see and react, it keeps you feeling stable and comfortable. Because their emphasis is on an enjoyable ride rather than performance, comfort hybrids tend to be the least expensive of the bunch. Frame : You get a aluminum frame, which turns what might have been a heavy clunker of a bike into a manageable option.
It is designed with an upright riding position in mind. This bike is perfect for park rides, relaxed cruising and weekend fun. Components : For shifters, it has a standard Shimano EZ-Fire configuration, paired to base level derailleurs on the front and rear.

The wheels are double walled aluminum alloy, and they spin well enough. The tires are Kenda Cross 40c, with a moderate tread suited to pavement, grass, hard sand and light trails. As for comfort, besides the frame geometry you have front spring forks with 63mm of travel and a spring shock seatpost to absorb vibrations and bumps. The always-popular Schwinn Discover checks all those boxes. Frame : Despite the low price tag, this bike impresses with an alloy frame and an integrated bike rack.
Components : The wheels are an attractive set of moderate V rims paired up to fairly wide tires with a bit of tread. The gears are controlled by SRAM grip shifters, and base level derailleurs. The drivetrain is very effective, but basic. Still, you have 21 speeds at your disposal, and when tuned properly they behave well enough. The riding position is very upright, comfortable and elegant.
It definitely has a cruiser-type feel to the ride, though not quite as low slung. I love the extras. An included bike rack, front and rear fenders, suspension seatpost and adjustable handlebars are so nice to have. The reasonable price tag is a factor too.
Photo Credit: Daniel Borman. Once you get too low in price, manufacturers have to start making deep compromises with components and frame quality. A good, affordable hybrid bike has a nice balance of decent components. I always recommend that a rider think carefully and realistically about their riding needs. Ask yourself questions. Will you be riding primarily in the city , for example?
Professional Bike Mechanic Having built and repaired bikes for the last 4 years — in both a professional and a hobby capacity — Will is enthusiastic about cycling in all its forms, but particularly fixies and urban bikes.
14 Super-Versatile Fitness and Hybrid Bikes
Living in beautiful Vancouver BC, Will gets out and cycles whenever he can. Current ride: a Norco XFR. I found this while researching bikes for seniors. My wife is in her early sixties, better shape than I not overweight although not as strong as I am. Her feet can complain from time to time, but not her knees. She is starting to develop some arthritis, but more so in her hands. We will be weekend riders, taking it up to get out more and to get the exercise my doc says I need. Thanks in advance for any advice you can share — and thanks for this site!
Hi Rique, yes the article is a few years old but I update it frequently to keep everything fresh. I am looking at buying two Hybrids very soon and they would be for my wife and I. Once in awhile they would travel along paths that are not paved. Trek is a well know company for building quality. So 2 questions.. Is Trek worth the price tag and are disk breaks worth paying an extra bucks? I understand the better breaking power in the rain but I will tell you, we will not be going on a bike ride in the rain.
Looking for opinions. Fantastic write up! Your picks seem to be on par with the majority that are out there. Essentially we want something good for extended road miles but can handle some bumps. Should we care too much about front suspension? All of our local shops seem to have their own small specific group of brands and push us towards what they sell. Thanks so much!! Great article!
I have bought every type of bike there is except BMX. I mostly buy Trek or Giant. Not sure what type of riding I liked most. Bought 11 new bikes in only 2 years. Needless to say lost money selling them. But finally found my dream bike!! And to my surprise it was the least expensive of the 11 bikes before that. A brand new Giant Escape 3,! This bike is a dream for road and bumpy torn up sidewalks or bike trails. It glides over them and this bike is very fast and responsive. I think it as fast as my Trek Domane 2. Thanks for the great article.
My wife and I have been exploring Minneapolis bike trails more this year. Looking for something better suited than my Univega zig-zag commuter and her Specialized Rock hopper. Thinking performance hybrid for me, dual sport for her.
Finding a road worthy, top quality hybrid bike for under 500 bucks
There are a million Alberto Contador wannabees on Minneapolis paths. Thanks so much for this! I was searching for an all purpose bike for my 14 yr. I chose the Nashbar Trekking 19 inch. I am hoping it will be durable enough for him and get him where he needs to go. It was strange ordering on line and not trying out ahead of time but it should be arriving this week.
